What is CLIL?

Let’s say right away, to sweep away misconceptions, that CLIL does not mean just teaching a subject in another language; CLIL is something more. It is a ‘dual focused educational approach in which an additional language is used for the learning and teaching of both content and language’ (Coyle, Hood, & Marsh, 2010). One of the best-known CLIL conceptual frameworks is the 4Cs framework (culture, communication, content and cognition) (Coyle et al., 2010) embedded in a relevant context, which can provide a background for the development of all CLIL activities in a given learning environment.
In other words, Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) is a teaching method where students learn a subject and a second language at the same time. CLIL is “an educational approach in which a foreign language is used as the medium of instruction to teach content subjects for mainstream students” (Nikula et al. 2013). It’s important to note that CLIL is not a means of simplifying content or reteaching something students already know in a new language but should truly integrate the language and content in order to be effective and efficient. The success of the approach is determined when both the subject matter and language are learned and enhanced. It is key to engage learners, making them an active part of the learning path and why not ,have fun!
Why Economics in English?
Nowadays, in the context of globalization, integration and close world cooperation, the significance of international languages is greatly raised, and the English language is officially considered the universal language, spoken and understood through the world; I could say that is the overall champion. Studying English and/or subjects in English became a “must” for a successful job. And this is one of the main reasons to attend a course of business in English as ESP (English for Specific Purpose) and not only English classes. I consider this way of learning as an opportunity to improve both English and Economics skills trough a new methodology and techniques of teaching in an authentic context. The aim of this course is to provide a better understanding of Economics in English by developing an awareness of the language, acquiring a professional terminology and key economics concepts.
